Chaim Pearlman in court Wednesday.

via ‘Not enough evidence to convict suspected Jewish terrorist Pearlman’ – Haaretz Daily Newspaper | Israel News.

Helping Jews move beyond the Holocaust to the Rule of Law

You see this face? This is the face of an angel. I see the face of an angel. This is what I spent most of my life thinking of and dreaming of as the face of an angel. His name means ‘life’ and I grew up feeling that he was preserving the ‘life’ the soul of our people. That is what we were doing in Kollel, the learning halls of perpetual study. I grew up worshiping the Ben Toah, the student of Torah, a young person of study, humility, gentleness, that has  been a prototype of ideal Jewish life going back thousands of years. He has early ancestors in generations of youth going  back to the great cities of Babylon, let alone all the major cities of Europe, West and East. He is embedded in my ideal self. I see him and I see calm, insight, thoughtfulness, intelligence, I see the character of Danny in the Potok’s The Chosen, and Motel the Tailor, of Fiddler on the Roof, all wrapped into one, gentle, learned, thoughtful, sensitive.

So how does this face of an angel become a racist and a murderer? Easy, bad teachers, bad philosophies. You can’t tell me he has had a harder life than 2000 years of pious young men in Eastern Europe and elsewhere. But for me losing him, turning against him, insisting that there actually be the rule of law in Israel so a man like this can stay behind bars the rest of his life, be deprived of life, the way that he deprived so many others, this is hard for me emotionally–and for millions of Jews who refuse to enforce the rule of law in Israel and Palestine. So I ask my readers to understand that the death of Potok’s Danny and Sholom Aleichem’s Motel is a hard death for us. The Nazis killed their bodies but this man has killed the soul of that Jewish archetype. We need to evolve a new set of archetypes of piety and decency, and it is not easy to face this.

AP: New al-Qaeda leader lived in U.S. for years – USATODAY.com.

— A suspected al-Qaeda operative who lived for more than 15 years in the U.S. has become chief of the terror network’s global operations, the FBI says, marking the first time a leader so intimately familiar with American society has been placed in charge of planning attacks.

Adnan Shukrijumah, 35, has taken over a position once held by 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who was captured in 2003, Miami-based FBI counterterrorism agent Brian LeBlanc told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview. That puts him in regular contact with al-Qaeda’s senior leadership, including Osama bin Laden, LeBlanc said.

Shukrijumah (SHOOK’-ree joohm-HAH’) and two other leaders were part of an “external operations council” that designed and approved terrorism plots and recruits, but his two counterparts were killed in U.S. drone attacks, leaving Shukrijumah as the de facto chief and successor to Mohammed — his former boss.

Before turning to radical strains of Islam, Shukrijumah lived in Miramar with his mother and five siblings, excelling at computer science and chemistry courses while studying at community college.

This is the part that enrages me and makes me wonder what nonviolent defense is there here:

He had come to South Florida in 1995 when his father, a Muslim cleric and missionary trained in Saudi Arabia, decided to take a post at a Florida mosque after several years at a mosque in Brooklyn, N.Y.

This is the part that interests me, makes me wonder about nonviolent defense against this.  Rest assured, if those of us who think in nonviolent terms about our neighbors and our world do not deal with terrorism then someone else will, and always does.

I am thinking frankly of the father, of the training of a cleric in Saudi Arabia, of the sermons, of Wahhabist Islam. It is true that any kid who is troubled can be radicalized by the web, but parents matter a lot, and my Muslim friends know very well the redemptive potential of religious parents and leaders, and the destructive potential, on young minds.

If I were a Muslim cleric in the United States, I would work hard for the next twenty years to firmly establish with my colleagues American guidelines and qualifications for giving sermons, an American form of Islam that can have great variety in custom, practice, liberalism and conservatism, but where some things and some overseas texts are out of bounds, off limits. I know many who are struggling in this direction, and we must be supportive. Otherwise the fearful Americans waiting in the wings to blame someone for a modern frightening world will gain the upper hand. Thank God we have a political party in charge now that does not sensationalize these stories. But we cannot be complacent because trouble is always brewing in politics unless one is vigilant.

You have to watch this short five minute film to believe it. Watch a village steadily stolen illegally by the Jewish National Fund, finally destroyed by the IDF and the State with hundreds of police, and then rebuilt and reclaimed by Jews and Arabs, citizens of Israel, together.

You don’t have to believe that this is exactly what the JNF has been doing for over a hundred years, you don’t have to read the long and complicated history through the eyes of Israel’s leading analysts like Tom Segev in One Palestine Complete, just look at five minutes of video to see the destruction of olive trees and the theft of land through planting ‘Jewish’ trees, donated by clueless American Jews, no doubt, as Arabs watch helplessly their entire village demolished. But then watch Jews and Arabs together rebuilding in a single day. Feel the power and the determination.

When will Jews, Christians and Arabs from around the world join this noble struggle of Arabs and Jewish citizens of Israel  instead of sitting on the sidelines cheering one side or another?

Go to Israel, support the peacemakers, the justice seekers, the change makers, support villagers abused by the state, by senseless bigotry.

What happens in the Holy Land is the patrimony of the entire Abrahamic family, and those who affiliate with that family have a duty to make things right there, not by hate, not by apathy and indifference, not by cowardice, and certainly not by supporting terrorism or terrorist groups, but by courageously embracing what is right, by supporting those engaged in heroic struggle, by applying the skills taught us by Gandhi and King to resist with love and respect, but to resist nevertheless.

The men arrested for trying to bomb two synagogues and other sites in New York apparently acted alone. They indeed were seeking an opportunity for jihad. But it was primarily in response to the deaths in Afghanistan in Pakistan at the hands of American soldiers. Now it appears that they were deeply involved with an informant who, according to the leader of the mosque, was a government agent who came two years ago to the mosque encouraging meetings on jihad.

So…did the government agent instigate this group of criminal men? Of course, this was a sting operation, but what are the ethics of sting operations? Is it the same infiltrating a mafia group and instigating a crime as infiltrating a house of worship and doing the same? I know the Jewish community would not be thrilled with some government agent who infiltrating Brooklyn and instigated some massive fraud scheme that got a lot of Sabbath observant people imprisoned.

Tough questions. New York did not deserve another terror attack, and Jews feel quite traumatized by this past decade of suicide bombings. I am chilled by the fact that I personally know several people in those Riverdale synagogues that might have been blown to bits one Saturday by these fine gentlemen. Grew up with some of them. And yet blame, or exclusive blame, seems harder for me to pin down. Just yesterday, I was sitting in my house teaching my daughter and heard a long low rumble. Then dismissed it. Half hour later there were no less than 12 emergency vehicles that came screaming down my quiet street, and I was terrified. I immediately thought of the Habad synagogue down the street, a nice place run by a young man who lost his childhood friend in the Mumbai massacre’s one Jewish target. I raced in my car and it was nothing, just a man scared by his faulty fire place.

I still have not gotten over this age of terror. And the war on terror that my taxes went toward for eight long years only made it all worse. It was not a war on terror but a war of terror. When civilized people learn how to fight a war on terror without becoming terrorists themselves then we will have won. The lessons of history demand nothing less.
