Comment on Defense officials back US bid to send envoy to Syria by PerryK

The Israeli military has a responsibility to protect the country. Soldiers know more than anyone else about the futility of war. I would trust the Israeli army leadership far more than the political leadership to make the right decisions with regards to peace.

In Syria a politician can not be voted out of office. The army leadership is no more pragmatic than the political leadership for the most part.

In the USA, there is the appearance that one's vote counts. Individual politicians are vulnerable to defeat but the larger economic agendas will still move forward independent of which politician is in power.

In the bigger picture, The leaders of Syria are like the vulnerable American politician. They can not be voted out but he can be removed from power or enjoy less of the rewards because their power is held by force.

In Syria's case it is Russia and Iran that keep the current leadership in power. Israel is hoping that the US could take over the role that Russia and Iran now play.

America is in the business of making money. If peace in the Middle East was profitable then it will be supported.

The right and the left argue with each other for the public's edification and distraction but the real agenda is profit.

Saudi Arabia has committed to purchase 60 billion in weapons form the US. The US wants Israel to buy the F35's to maintain their technological advantage over their "enemies". That's what its all about.

Israel is a small fry in the battle between much bigger fish. Compare Israel's GDP to the big boys' and you see how little power they have.

The world is choking from running on oil. But the reality is that the World's economy is kept afloat in part by selling weapons to the oil rich regimes.

The quartet that negotiates peace is in a clear conflict of interest.

To keep the game going, the people of the West need to be distracted by the apparent polarities of left and right. All this happens so that business as usual can go on.

     Who pays the price ?

Innocent people who are sacrificed to keep the tensions high.

[...] A drunk man urinated on the prayer rugs of Al-Iman mosque. That alert led to a social movement on the web to gather donations to clean or replace those rugs. The donations surpassed all expectations, not only in the dollar amount but in the messages of friendship and interfaith solidarity. We need more initiatives like this that can bring us together as humans and as Americans. Thanks to Rabbis Gershon Steinberg and Velveteen Rabbi! And thanks to fellow filmmaker David Vyorst for sharing this story: http://www.marcgopin.com/?p=3815 [...]

Thank you for your incredibly thoughtful comment. I'd just like to clarify that when I said a military not governed by civilians is a bunch of thugs, I did not mean that the people who make up the military are thugs who need to be kept in check. Rather, a military that only answers to itself runs far too high a risk of becoming an "enemy" of the people.

Like you said, a military is made up of people who can choose to do good or to do evil. But without civilian control, the choice to do "evil" becomes easier and with far less consequences.

My statement isn't a judgment on the character of military personnel, but rather a word of caution.

First let me say that I believe in the importance of a civilian controlled military just as I believe in the role of individual citizens in a democracy. I am responding to what I think is a misconception by many that military personnel are bunch of thugs that have to be controlled by civilians or they will resort to animal behavior. Not unlike any organization the military is made up of people who choose to do good and evil. Some of the finest men of character I have ever met have served with me in the military. Men and women who continuously seek to live honorable lives respecting others under the most challenging conditions possible. Unfortunately their constant vigilance is seldom the seen in the spotlight while the deeds of those who on occasion act like thugs are the center of media attention. I believe that the military plays an extremely important role in confronting the conflicts that face humanity. The military sent me to George Mason last year to study conflict resolution. I am the second Chaplain to have this opportunity and two more chaplains will be there this coming year. I am currently writing a manual the purpose of which is to train military chaplains, who are advisors to their commanders in conflict resolution skills.

I also thought the article was excellent. It is tragic when a witch-hunt is aimed at anyone, and in this case it's directed at the people who are most in a position to help. I think a mosque at Ground Zero in Manhattan would be a wonderful symbol of tolerance and respect, and another way to honor the 9/11 victims.

If anyone from the Cordoba Institute is reading this, please keep up your work, and know that there are many Americans who support what you are doing!
