April 21 is the traditional commemoration of the Holocaust, which destroyed 90% of European Jews and 30% of world Jewry. Demography suggests that due to the number of children who were killed, over a million, there are over 20 million Jews missing now, and the population has never recovered.

Just a few of the six million murdered in the Holocaust were my kinsmen and cousins. Gopins came a hundred years ago from a small village called Troyanivka, now located in Western Ukraine. I dream of them all the time.

In August 1941 the Jewish residents were all rounded up and murdered at an oil dump that became their final resting place. There were approximately 200-300 men, women and children.

Here is an account of what happened:

In August 1941 the Nazis executed 375 Jewish men in Manevychi; in September 1942 the remaining Manevychi Jews, ca. 2,000 people, were killed by the Nazis and their local helpers. Jews of the surrounding towns perished in a similar way. Those few who survived did so by joining Soviet partisans, mainly the brigade led by Nikolai Konishchuk (Kruk). Contains memoirs, survivors’ accounts, photographs, and other materials, describing prewar life in Manevychi and its vicinity, the flight of Jews to inner USSR in summer 1941, the fate of Jews under Nazi rule, fighting with the partisans, and survival.

Here is an account of what is left there:

Our Father, our king, Master of the spirits of all living things, give a proper rest on the wings of the Divine Presence in the highest realms of the holy and pure ones, who shine like the highest heavens, to the six million of Israel, men and women, boys and girls, who were murdered and slaughtered and asphyxiated and buried alive at the hands  of the oppressors in the European Exile.

    Dear Marc,
I am a German, living in Switzerland now. I am very very sorry, for what my people did to the Jewish. And I am very sorry, especially for your family. Thank you for sharing this story. It is important, that they will be never forgotten.
My parents grew up (both born in 1934) during 2nd World-War and I am not sure, if my grandparents were somehow involved. Like in many German families, it was not possible to talk about this time. Every question was answered with a silence, which was horrible to stay. But however – since I was a teenager and heard about Shoah in school for the first time, I try to take responsibility for what the German did. Sometimes the burdon was too big to carry, but I found ways to work for reconsiliation between Germans and Jews and to work for peace on the world. I think this is the reason, why we are facebook friends, now. 🙂 We can create something New!
It’s necessary to learn out of the history!
This can’t fill the gap of all your missing and killed ancestors. But it can be a support for the next generations! So I am happy, that we can be friends today!
    Love, peace and shalom

Oh, I am so pleased to meet you. Of course, I appreciate everything you have said, and I do think that there is a new day and a new opportunity for us all to do wonderful work together to heal the world. By the way, the day that my community died in Troyanevka, there was maybe one German officer present, according to family reports. What happened was a European tragedy of historical prejudices, and it really is the tragedy of racism itself which all groups can be guilty of. Thanks so much for caring.

My maternal grandmother’s family lived in Troyanovka. She came to Canada in the 1920’s but the remainder of her family there were murdered in the Shoah. It would be interesting to communicate with you.

  • John Premachuk

Both of my grandparents lived in Troyanivka as my Father used to always remind me. My Father’s name was Dr. Peter Premachuk(D. 2011) and his parents were both Premachuks/Wamischuk. I will be travelling to the Ukraine in May 2015 to stand on the same ground as my grandparents with my son who is now 20 years old. I have been conducting research on the Ukrainian famine of the 30″s. My grandparents were fortunate enough to leave this area between 1913-1916 before Lenin/Stalin starved the community in the 1930’s. I am so sorry for the atrocities committed by the European community against all mankind that seemed to go on from 1917 when Lenin took power until today with current Russian ambitions. Is it possible to connect with to discuss how I could get a list of those inhabitants of the village between 1910-1940? What sources of material would you suggest I seek out to continue my efforts?

John: I’m Alan Switzer from the post below. Did you get to Troyanovka? What are your impressions? Do you have any pictures?

    • Marc Gopin

John, I am so sorry i missed this, thank you so much for your comment. I fully agree. I am not sure about how to find those details. Tell us what happened on your trip?

alan what was the name of your familly?

    • AdamJoseph

My grandmother’s maternal name was “Viner” or “Weiner” – first name “Rossa” or “Rossi”. My grandfather’s name was Landen. I don’t believe my grandfather came from there originally, but I’m not certain.
